Frequently Asked Questions

What is genetic testing and how does it work?+
Genetic testing analyzes your DNA to identify changes or variants that may affect your health. A simple blood draw or saliva sample is sent to our laboratory, where advanced Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology reads your genetic code. Our expert team then interprets the results and provides a clear, actionable report.
Is genetic testing covered by insurance?+
Coverage varies by insurer and test type. Many reproductive and cancer-risk genetic tests are covered when ordered by a physician with appropriate clinical indications. We recommend contacting your insurance provider before testing. Our team can also help with prior authorization when needed.
How long does it take to get results?+
Turnaround times vary by test. NIPT results are typically available within 5 business days, carrier screening within 14 business days, and cancer panels within 14 business days. Expedited (STAT) processing is available for select tests.
Will my genetic information be kept private?+
Absolutely. Your genetic data is protected under strict confidentiality protocols and applicable privacy regulations. We use encrypted systems for data storage and transmission, and your results are shared only with you and your ordering physician.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to get tested?+
Yes, genetic tests at IMC Genomics are ordered through a healthcare provider. If you don’t have a provider, contact us and we can help connect you with a genetic counselor or physician who can guide you through the process.
